| HAMAP: Corynebacterium urealyticum (strain ATCC 43042 / DSM 7109) complete proteome |
| Species code: | CORU7 |
| Taxonomy: | Bacteria; Actinobacteria; Actinobacteridae; Actinomycetales; Corynebacterineae; Corynebacteriaceae; Corynebacterium (TaxID: 504474) [NEWT/ NCBI] |
| Description: | Bacteria from the genus Corynebacterium are Gram-positive, nonmotile rods. C.urealyticum is a strictly aerobic, lipid-requiring, urealytic bacterium of the human skin flora that causes urinary tract infections; strain DSM 7109 was recovered from a patient with alkaline-encrusted cystitis. Metabolic analysis of the lipid-requiring phenotype revealed the absence of a fatty acid synthase gene and the presence of a beta-oxidation pathway along with a large repertoire of auxillary genes for the degradation of exogenous fatty acids. A urease locus may play a pivotal role in virulence of C. urealyticum by the alkalinization of human urine and the formation of struvite stones. Multidrug resistance in DSM 7109 is mediated by transposable elements, conferring resistances to macrolides, lincosamides, ketolides, aminoglycosides, chloramphenicol, and tetracycline (modified from PubMed 18367281). |
