- The enzyme from the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae catalyzes the
conversion of methylglyoxal into lactaldehyde; the reverse reaction
has not been demonstrated.
- It differs in coenzyme requirement from EC 1.1.1.78, which is found
in mammals.
- It also acts on phenylglyoxal and glyoxal.
