  • The enzyme from the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae catalyzes the conversion of methylglyoxal into lactaldehyde; the reverse reaction has not been demonstrated.
  • It differs in coenzyme requirement from EC 1.1.1.78, which is found in mammals.
  • It also acts on phenylglyoxal and glyoxal.
